Terra Incognita
Charcoal on tracing paper
2009
Terra Incognita refers to an unknown land
in Latin. In cartography, it is regions that have not been documented. The term
had been used in maps from the 16th until the 19th century when terra
incognita disappeared from maps.
While Google Earth and Maps reveal
the whole planet in detail, walking and wandering without a goal still often gives many of us a great
inspiration and excites man´s spirit of romantic adventure.
These drawings revive Terra Incognita and investigate
a little details of the
bumpy floor by using frottage- rubbing-, the most basic
and intimate print skill.
